Saucha: Clean Up Your Act

The first of the Niyamas is Saucha, usually translated as purity or cleanliness.

That can sound a bit severe.

A little too close to those “clean eating” posts that make you feel guilty for enjoying a biscuit.

That’s not what we’re talking about.

Saucha is much more practical than that.

It asks a simple question:

What helps you feel clear?

And perhaps just as importantly:

What leaves you feeling a bit grubby—physically, mentally, or emotionally?

Saucha includes the obvious things.

Wash your body.

Brush your teeth.

Try not to live in a house that looks like a student flat after Freshers’ Week.

But it also includes what you take in through your senses.

The food you eat, the conversations you have, the news you consume, the people you spend time with, and the endless stream of content on your phone all become part of your inner environment.

Patañjali tells us that through Saucha come clarity, cheerfulness, focus, and a greater capacity for self-understanding.

That tracks.

When your body feels good, your space is reasonably tidy, and your mind isn’t full of

rubbish, life tends to feel a little easier.

Saucha is not about perfection.

It is not about a spotless house, a colour-coded pantry, or pretending you never eat

cake.

Although, I confess I love a good organisational system more than anyone should 😆

It is about creating conditions that support clarity.

Sometimes that means making a nourishing meal.

Sometimes it means stepping away from social media.

Sometimes it means opening the windows, putting fresh sheets on the bed, and going to sleep at a sensible hour.

Spirituality isn't always incense and chanting. Some days it's less about dramatic mystical experiences and more about making a cup of tea, tidying the kitchen, and helping the person in front of you feel cared for.

Over the next 24 hours, notice what you are consuming.

Not just food, but information, conversations, and thoughts.

Notice what leaves you feeling clearer.

Notice what leaves you feeling cluttered.

And where you can, choose what brings a little more clarity.

That is Saucha.
